Nămăiești Monastery: A Hidden Gem of Spiritual Heritage

Nestled near the town of Câmpulung at an altitude of 800 meters, Nămăiești Monastery is one of the three rock monasteries in the area, alongside Cetățuia and Corbii de Piatră. Located in the village of Nămăiești, this serene sanctuary is also in close proximity to the George Topârceanu Memorial House. The first historical mentions of the village and the monastery date back to between 1503 and 1547, found in the documents of rulers Radu the Great and Mircea the Shepherd. The monastery’s church, a historical monument from the 14th century, houses one of the oldest icons in Romania and Christianity, renowned for its miraculous powers. Legend has it that the icon was painted by Saint Apostle and Evangelist Luke. The church, carved into the rock, is believed to have been established during a time when Christianity was practiced in secret within caves, dating back to the early Christian Dacians. With its rich history, Nămăiești Monastery serves as an important pilgrimage site.

While many precise details about the rock-hewn church remain unclear, its origins are thought to be linked to the discovery of the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, believed to date back to the time of Negru Vodă. Some historians argue that this site may have originally been a Christian catacomb during Roman times, while others suggest it could have been a temple dedicated to the god Zamolxes. The monastery suffered significant damage during World War I due to bombings. Nămăiești Monastery is regarded as the oldest monastery for nuns in Wallachia. The church, nestled within a cave, holds the revered icon of the Virgin Mary, known for its miraculous deeds. A local legend tells of Saint Andrew having spent a night in this very cave. For us, Nămăiești Monastery has become a beloved place for spiritual rejuvenation and tranquility, located just 50 km from Hillden. Colțul Chiliilor Monastery: A Historic Spiritual Retreat

Established in 1421, Colțul Chiliilor Monastery is the oldest religious settlement in the Zărnești area. Built under the mountains as a refuge against the Ottoman and Tatar invasions, it was set ablaze in 1718 by imperial decree. Nevertheless, the local community persevered in their religious traditions by creating an altar and a bell in a nearby cave. In the 20th century, the monastery was transformed into the Chapel of Saint Cuvioasa Paraschiva, celebrated on October 14th. Today, a stunning new monastery occupies the site of the ancient chapel. Located in the majestic Piatra Craiului Mountains, the monastery features a charming little church set within a cave, accompanied by a spring believed to possess healing waters. The cave’s walls are adorned with hundreds of icons, and the stone altar, along with the dim atmosphere, creates a uniquely spiritual environment. Notably, the monastery was reconstructed using remnants from a communist building and the décor of a Hollywood film set. Colțul Chiliilor Monastery is a must-see for those interested in ecumenical tourist circuits.

To reach Colțul Chiliilor Monastery, several hiking trails are available—check the map here for details. While there is a 4×4 vehicle access, it is exclusively reserved for the monks’ supplies, meaning tourists must hike to the site. The journey begins from Zărnești, heading toward Plaiul Foii. About 100 meters past the last house on the left side of the road, you’ll find a marked path that leads directly to the monastery. The hike takes approximately 2 hours one way and is easy enough for children. It is also accessible for mountain biking enthusiasts, though it is a technical route recommended for those with experience. You can also start from the road leading to Cabana Plaiul Foii, where you’ll find a sign pointing to the monastery; this route is shorter and equally scenic.
